Irish Adoption Agencies

State (Health Board) & Private Adoption Agencies in the Republic of Ireland

If you cannot recall the name of the Adoption Agency or individual through which your child was placed, do not be distressed - this is a common reaction to the trauma of separation from your child.

Every such Agency or individual was required by law to register all adoptions with the State’s regulatory body, The Adoption Board. If you write to the Board with all the details you can remember, they will have a copy of the Consent Forms you signed at the time. If they do not have a copy of your file, this possibly means that your child’s "adoption" was illegal, and we would like you to contact us so that we can provide you with special assistance.

We must emphasise that it is strongly advisable to write (rather than email or phone) when making contact with an Adoption Agency, Health Board Adoption Service or The Adoption Board, and you should keep a copy of the letter you’ve written and send it by registered post.

It is unfortunately true that waiting lists for even a first appointment with a Social Worker to discuss a case have grown longer with the years. We are frankly appalled that natural parents and their adult children are sometimes having to wait as long as three or five years after already enduring such a long time apart. Although admittedly rare, there have been occasions when one of the parties to reunion has died while awaiting their turn on the list, and it has been enormously distressing for them to endure this "double grief".

Note: The Adoption Board has been reforming its policies on post-adoption services with the help of an Advisory Committee on which Adoption Loss/Natural Parents Network of Ireland is participating. The National Contact Preference Register is the first stage of this reform. The coming year will see the introduction of a Code of Practice for all organisations offering an Information, Search and Reunion service in the State - whether by The Adoption Board, Health Boards, private Adoption Agencies or NGOs. It is envisaged that any breach will lead to penalties or eventual de-registration, and that an Appeals mechanism will be put in place.
